I wonder where Mike Martz is going to land? As an unfortunate Lions fan, I thought Martz did a decent job when he was with the Lions. I remember when the Lions started off with a 6-2 record (2007 season) with Martz calling the shots. Then, they lost a couple of games and everyone panicked. They wanted Martz to have a more balanced attack in his offense, and then everything went south after that. I didn''t watch too many SF games, but it seems he got run out of town for the same reason even though SF did better than last year.

I think Martz might yet show up again, but probably exclusively as an offensive coordinator.  I have never been a huge fan of Martz, I do think at times he does not run enough but my main complaint with him was from a head coaching perspective.  During his time in St Louis he would throw the idea of smart football out the window.  I remember clock management issues and bad defenses near the end.  I thought he did as well as could be expected in Detroit (that organization had and probably has bigger issues than Mike Martz) and the same can be said currently in San Francisco.  From what I saw of the 49ers (Not much) Martz ran the ball plenty the shortcomings again were more talent related than coaching.  Besides, Martz could run with Frank Gore in San Fran and he did but he did not have a lot to work with at wideout and quarterback in San Fran.  In Detroit he had a workable QB, not a great QB but usable and talent at wideout.  Seriously what did the people in Detroit expect from the running game?  Kevin Smith just is not Barry Sanders or Marshall Faulk and this year bringing in an over the hill Rudi Johnson should have given everyone the proof.  Last time I checked I do not remember anyone listing Detroits offensive line as great either, so I am right with you on all this.  Martz probably should have been given a lot more credit for the success that was seen in Detroit.

With the Lions cleaning house it will be interesting to see what happens now.  I absolutely love Calvin Johnson, I was struggling to think of another receiver as dominating as Fitzgerald that is young in this weeks podcast.  You bringing up Detroit quickly reminded me of Calvin Johnson.  The Lions have no where to go but up now.

I always found Martz's play calling interesting, but the QBs always seemed to get killed. But yeah he was kind of whacky sometimes.

I'm hoping the Lions will turn it around – they have no choice. I think this season about a quarter of the games were blacked out locally in Detroit because they couldn't sell out. CJ was awesome this year – he should have made the pro bowl. Too bad I'll have to give him up for my fantasy keeper league – maybe I'll luck out and be able to draft him again in the second round.

Guess who is rumored to be in the running as offensive coordinator with the Chicago Bears.  Oh yeah, Mike Martz might be coming back.

Long-time NFL offensive coordinator Mike Martz has not yet been contacted about the Bears' opening at the position, according to the Chicago Tribune. He has not been ruled out yet in the Windy City, but he doesn't seem like a likely candidate to land the job at the moment. One thing working in his favor, however, is his relationship with Bears head coach Lovie Smith, who served as Martz's defensive coordinator earlier this decade in St. Louis. As of now, USC offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates looks to be the favorite for the gig.coach handbags

Thanks for the update.  I for one would be interested to see Mike Martz in Chicago.
