After seeing the US Olympic Curling team on Real Sports on HBO this weekend I am more convinced than ever that Curling is a complete joke. It might have it's fans, people who live on the frozen tundra and like shuffle board, but that is all curling is, shuffle board on ice. The US team's diet consisted of Mountain Dew and McDonalds and the dudes seriously did not look like athletes.

I tried for several years now to give Curling a chance, but after seeing those dudes. I am convinced that if given the training opportunity I could make the Curling team. I am sorry, but the GAME, not sport, deserves the same respect as shuffle board. I am just as impressed with the worlds best shuffle board player, back gammon players, what have you. They are seriously hurting for Winter Olympic events when Curling is in the Olympics. I do not care how popular it is in Canada, it is only because it is too damn cold to go outside. Have you ever thought about just how accessible most if not all the events in the Winter Olympics are to most of the people in the world? The answer is not very.

I remember when the Lions started off with a 6-2 record (2007 season) with Martz calling the shots. Then, they lost a couple of games and everyone panicked. They wanted Martz to have a more balanced attack in his offense, and then everything went south after that. I didn''t watch too many SF games, but it seems he got run out of town for the same reason even though SF did better than last year.

2004 BD National Champions - Utah - 12-0 and USC - 13-0-0 (Split Championship - sorry Auburn, but I gave you 1993. I could not get the trophy to split right three ways)

I need to get some posts going again out here. Twitter and sharing Google Reader have really stunted my sports discussion.

I so was feeling the Washington Huskies over USC. I picked them in both College Pickems, though with the spread it kind of stunts my prediction some. I am pretty certain USC will lose at least one more this year, though they were really ripe against a vastly improved Huskies team. The Huskies are one of the college teams I root for, so I was all to familiar with what they were capable of doing against USC.

I am not convinced Penn State is very good. It hurts to say that, and maybe they are playing down to their competition. I watched them all three weeks and trust me when I tell you they do not look dominating. I worry about their defensive backs and they have some good wideouts but their offensive line looks weaker than last year. Iowa might thump them next week, their first true test.

The VaTech Hokies have no offense, they should have lost to Nebraska today, only Nebraska is even more sad. The Hokies handed the Corn Huskers a win on a golden platter and yet the Corn Huskers found a way to lose it with only 90 seconds left. Blown coverage and and 80 something yard gain and there you have it. Nebraska loses again to a top 20 team, and the Hokies are not a very good top 20 team.

Since there was no BDFL podcast this week, here are my thoughts and predictions for this week in the NFL.

News and Notes

I'm disappointed Drew Brees came up short against Detroit to eclipse Dan Marino's record. Brees' 386 yards blew away his 316.8 yds/game average this season, but he needed 16 more to break the record. Still, he ended up with a second-best-ever 5069 yards. As a consolation, his ten 300-plus-yard passing games tie Rich Gannon's 2002 record for the most in one season.

Of the coaches that have been fired since the end of the regular season, I'm most surprised by the Jets' letting go of Eric Mangini. He should return as a head coach somewhere else next season.

I can't believe we have two 8-8 division winners this year -- Chazona. That is, San Diego and Arizona, the two teams that temporarily shared a home field in 2003. Neither will make a dent in the playoffs.

Wild Card Predictions

Atlanta (11-5) at Arizona (8-8): The Cardinals won the NFC West by being the least bad team. The Falcons were much better. Perhaps the Cardinals are having trouble selling out the game because it's on a Saturday that's part of an extended holiday weekend, but I think it's more than that. Atlanta should continue their resurgence: Falcons 34, Cardinals 17.

Indianapolis (12-4) at San Diego (8-8): The Colts ride a nine-game win streak into this one and are 6-2 on the road this season, including a win in San Diego. The Chargers have been very inconsistent and won't be able to pull this game out. Colts 27, Chargers 23.

Baltimore (11-5) at Miami (11-5): The Ravens won handily in Miami earlier this season (27-13), and I think they'll do it again. However, the defenses on both teams will keep it close. Ravens 13, Dolphins 12.

Philadelphia (9-6-1) at Minnesota (10-6): Both of these teams were lucky to make it into the playoffs. I think the battle-tested Eagles will contain the Vikings' running game enough to win. Eagles 28, Vikings 24.

Yes, I think all the away teams will win this weekend. The weather shouldn't factor in as a home-field advantage in any of the contests; two are in domes and two are in southern stadiums. The watering down of the playoff seeds accomplished with the 2002 realignment is to blame.

Mangini, Crennel and Marinelli in one day. I pretty much agree with all these, the only one that mildly surprised me was Mangini. Though after an awesome first season and a great draft that first year I cannot say he has done much. In addition to Mangini being fired I would not be surprised to see Brett Favre finally call it quits. His arm is obviously fading as the year progresses, I thought I noticed it last season and it was obvious this season. Great Quarterback, no harm in giving it another run, but his reign has ended.

Crennel needed to go, numerous coaching errors over the years. Not just the losses, but many mistakes that led to the losses. Poor clock management was an obvious one over the years. Marinelli, well, you have to fire a coach that goes 0-16, especially with the mess this organization has.

Unless the Eagles win it all, I think Andy Reid needs to go. If the Eagles win it all I feel like it would be inspite of Andy Reid. Great defensive coaching on the Eagles, the offense passes too much and again clock management issues for many seasons.

Herm Edwards should be fired in Kansas City as well, not sure that will happen, but it should.
